Sweet Potato & Kale Vegan Dog Food Recipe

Veganism and vegetarianism are on the rise with humans, and we're seeing the same trend in the pet food industry.

If your vet agrees, this sweet potato and kale vegan dog food recipe could fit your pup well.

Vegan diets for dogs aren't incredibly popular because most experts preach the benefits of meat, a large part of a dog's diet.

Gone are the days of relying on processed kibble as the “one-stop shop” for your pet’s diet.

The drive to bring dogs back to a more natural way of eating is growing stronger among today’s pet owners; frankly, kibble and canned wet food aren't cutting it.

Research has shown that providing balanced homemade dog food meals is the healthiest way to feed your pet.

You can use organic, whole-food ingredients that eliminate processed, artificial ingredients from your pet's diet.

If not done properly, feeding a vegan diet could result in protein deficiency, an amino acid imbalance and/or a vitamin and mineral deficiency.

This is why it is so important to work with a trained professional to create a healthy balance of vegan recipes for your dog. In doing this, you'll be able to offer your pet a variety of meals, while still meeting his nutritional requirements.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 2 cans (15 ounces) black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 ⅓ cups uncooked brown rice
  • 2 cups kale (chopped)

Instructions

Drain and rinse the black beans. You can leave the sweet potato raw, but if you pup isn't used to eating whole foods or he's particularly picky, he may not eat it unless it's cooked.

You can bake, boil or microwave the sweet potato.

Cook the rice according to the instructions on the packaging. Chop the sweet potato into bite-size pieces appropriate for your dog.

You will want to dice the kale into small bits, as your dog may not like chewing large pieces of leafy greens.

Now, combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl. Fold together until thoroughly mixed. When all ingredients have cooled completely, you can feed this vegan dog food recipe to your pup.

Serving Size Recommendation: You can serve this homemade vegan dog food to your pet as soon as it has cooled.

I recommend feeding about 1/2 cup of food for every 20-25 pounds of body weight.

This recommendation is for 2 servings per day. So, a 25-pound dog would eat about 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup in the evening.

This is just a guideline. Some dogs, like working dogs and very active breeds, will need more calories than this.

Lazier pets and senior dogs may not need as many.

It's best to consult your veterinarian about the appropriate serving size for your dog.

They will also help you evaluate meals to ensure they meet your pet's unique nutritional needs.

If necessary, they will assist you in choosing the best supplements and/or multivitamins to add.

How to store: You can store the leftover homemade vegan dog food in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days or freeze it, and it’ll keep for up to 3 months.

Keep in mind that this recipe includes no preservatives, so it won't last nearly as long as commercial dog food.
