A pair of Beagle dogs were saved by a passing truck driver and are now recovering after they were thrown out of a moving vehicle going full speed on a snowy New York highway.
While both dogs are alive and are getting better, unfortunately, they suffered serious injuries – broken ribs, contusions to their lungs and shoulders, and leg fractures. One of them had to have the front leg amputated. Beagles are one and five years old.
Nobody saw the plates of the car that committed this cruel crime, and the New York State Police currently has no leads. They ask for people who were in or around the area of Interstate 81 near Whitney Point, approximately 16 miles north of Binghamton on Wednesday, December 12th, to report and help find the perpetrators.
The truck driver who stopped to save the dogs saw the whole event unfold as both dogs were thrown out of a Dodge Durango (described as rusty with a dirty rear window), which was heading north toward Cortland. According to police, the trucker immediately stopped to bring the dogs into safety and picked up the one dog that was in much worse shape and couldn't walk while the other continued limping after the trucker. He then contacted state troopers.
After they arrived, the authorities helped to care for and bandage both dogs and splinted the leg of one dog right there on the side of the highway. On a cold and snowy day, both Beagles were kept warm with blankets and a truck driver's sweatshirt and were treated to some dog biscuits to draw their attention away from the terrible accident.
Both pups were then transferred to Broome County Humane Society. The two Beagle mixes had to be renamed, so the one-year-old was named Adam, after the trucker, and the five-year-old was named Trooper, after the state troopers who helped to secure the animals.
New York State Police are hoping for people to provide them with any possible leads and more details on the suspect SUV, and particularly if someone with a dash cam happened to be on Interstate 81 on Wednesday, December 12th. According to the truck driver, the car in question was spotted between the Marathon and Whitney Point exits at 9:30 AM.
