Recipe: Seafood Patties for Dogs

Seafood is packed with nutritional benefits for dogs, but it can also be dangerous if you don't serve it properly.

This recipe is made with shrimp and tuna fish, but you could use other types of seafood as well.

Just be sure to research the ingredients you choose to make sure you are making seafood patties for dogs that are safe and healthy.

Shrimp are a low-calorie, low-fat protein source for your pet. They are also rich in antioxidants, vitamin B12, niacin, and phosphorus.

Shrimp is also slightly high in cholesterol, so it's important that you don't make it a regular staple in your dog's food.

My favorite thing about feeding a homemade diet is that I can change up the recipes to add a lot of variety to my dog's diet.

One day my pups are eating seafood patties and the next they can enjoy a yummy beef stew. Not only does this keep meal time interesting, it also ensures they get a well balanced diet full of necessary nutrients.

Seafood Patties for Dogs

Seafood Patty IngredientsYou may be worried about adding garlic to your dog's food.

While it is true that most scientific research today shows that large amounts of garlic can be poisonous to dogsthere are also many arguments (particularly from holistic veterinarians) that garlic may provide important health benefits for dogs.

Ultimately, it's best to have a consultation with your veterinarian before feeding any amount of garlic. Of course, you also need to do what is best for you. If you're uncomfortable feeding garlic to your dog, don't do it.

Garlic is one of the most well-studied vegetables out there, and a ton of human clinical trials demonstrate its health benefits.

Some of this evidence has been the basis that vets have focussed on for advising garlic for dogs, but we are yet to see any hard proof on the matter.

Here is what we currently know about the health benefits of garlic for people:

  • Garlic has medicinal properties (1)
  • Garlic lowers blood pressure (23)
  • Garlic helps to fight off colds and sicknesses (45)
  • Garlic lowers the risk of heart diseases (678)
  • Garlic may help to detoxify the body (9)
  • Garlic helps fight off brain diseases (1011)
  • Garlic strengthens bones and helps with osteoarthritis (121314)

Unfortunately, there has not been much research on the benefits of garlic for dogs. You'll have to do your own research and consult with trusted experts in the veterinary field.

Make your own decision, but if you don't feel comfortable adding garlic to these seafood patties for dogs, don't do it!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 oz. ground shrimp
  • 12 oz. canned tuna in oil
  • 1 mashed sweet potato
  • 2 garlic cloves (crushed)
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. thyme
  • 1/4 tsp. turmeric

Instructions

This recipe is extremely simple to make. All you have to do is combine all of the ingredients in a mixing bowl. I form the food into patties that are portioned into 1/2 cup servings. I squish the patties between two pieces of wax paper and freeze them.

Once frozen, you can easily store them in an airtight bag or container. The recommended serving size is about 1/2 cup for every 20-25 pounds of body weight. You could freeze the patties in smaller/larger sizes depending on the appropriate serving size for your pup.

Keep in mind that this serving size is just a recommendation. More active dogs may need more calories, while lazier pets may not need as many. The best thing to do is to consult your veterinarian about the right serving for your dog. They will also guide you in adding any necessary supplements to make this meal nutritionally balanced for your pet.
