Review: Bully Stick Chews for Dogs From Raw Paws Pet Food

Bully sticks go by many names. They are often referred to as beef sticks, pizzle sticks and steer sticks. They are made from the pizzle or penis of a bull. Depending on the manufacturer, they are prepared differently.

Usually, the pizzle is cleaned naturally and hung to dry. Then the muscle is slow-roasted to lock in the natural flavor of the beef. This process doesn't use any harmful chemicals to color or flavor the bully sticks, which is one of the many reasons why they are a safer alternative to rawhide chews.

Not only are they all-natural, they are also easily digestible. Unlike rawhide chews that can block your pet's intestinal track, bully sticks are easily digestible. As with most dog chews, they also help to keep your pup's teeth clean by scraping off plaque and tartar buildup.

Bully sticks are also high in protein, as they are made with 100% beef pizzle. Just be sure that the bully sticks you're looking for are made with healthy beef from a reputable manufacturer. Raw Paws Pet Food prides themselves on making healthy products, so I was excited for our dogs to try their Jumbo 6-inch Bully Sticks.

Raw Paws Pet Food Bully Sticks Review

I've tried other bully sticks with my dogs, and they've always been great – except the smell. Usually you can smell them as soon as you tear the package open. These are low-odor bully sticks. They aren't completely odorless, but they aren't nearly as nauseating as some of the other brands we've tried.

As you'll see in my video review, I was sent the Jumbo Bull Sticks from Raw Paws Pet Food free of charge. These are about 3 times as thick as traditional bully sticks you give to dogs to chew, which means they'll keep your dog busy for a longer period of time.

It typically takes our chocolate Labrador a little less than 10 minutes to eat a regular bully stick, but it took her more than 20 to get through these Jumbo Bully Sticks from Raw Paw.

Our lab is a strong chewer, so she can get through chews in a short amount of time. Our little Beagle mix and our Boxer are both slower chewers. Our Boxer won't finish one of these bully sticks in one chew session, and our Beagle will work on one for more than an hour before it's gone.

I was pleased to learn that these bully sticks come from grass fed, USDA inspected beef that is hormone and antibiotic free. As I mentioned, they are a single ingredient dog treat, so you won't have to worry about any additives or preservatives upsetting Fido's tummy.

Unfortunately, the healthier the product the more expensive it usually is. While you can pick up a cheap package of rawhide chews for around $10 that will have double the number of chews, you can't get these healthy bully sticks for a cheap price.

You can purchase a 10-count bag of these chews on Amazon for $26.99. That's nearly $3 each! While I know that's pricey for a bag of dog chews, you also have to remember that you're getting a top quality product that will be safe and healthy for your pet. Traditionally bully sticks are much more expensive than rawhide chews, it's not an issue that is unique to this brand.

It may be a smarter idea to invest a little more in his chews now in order to save money on an expensive surgery caused by a piece of rawhide lodged in your pup's digestive track.

These bully sticks are great for small to medium breeds or large dogs that aren't strong chewers. For more aggressive chewers, Raw Paw Pet Food also offers 12-inch sticks. I would certainly choose the larger size for our Labrador Retriever next time. $3 is a lot to pay for a chew that only lasts her 20 minutes. I do think they are a great deal for small breeds and dogs that are slow chewers.

raw-paws-pet-food-bully-stick-reviewThese bully sticks are healthy and safe for your dog. They are a great alternative to rawhide chews that can cause choking and get stuck in the intestinal track. They are quite a bit more expensive, but you'll have to judge for yourself if they are the best chew for your pooch.
