Home Dog Supplies Reviews Review: Portion Pro Rx Automatic Pet Feeder

Review: Portion Pro Rx Automatic Pet Feeder

The Portion Pro Rx takes automatic pet feeding up a notch. This feeder uses a patented RFID system that controls when and which pet in your home can access the food in the dish. If you have a multi-pet household and one pet needs a specific diet, this is a great way to keep everyone else out of his meals.

Automatic pet feeders have many uses, including:

  • keeping pets on a strict feeding schedule
  • keeping pets on a diet
  • feeding your pet when you're not at home
  • feeding one pet a specialized diet

PortionPro Rx Automatic Pet Feeder with Active RFID Technology - Prevents Food Stealing, Perfect for Prescription Diets, Schedules Meals for Multiple Pets (Cats & Dogs) While they aren't a necessary product that all pet owners must have, they do make feeding Fido easier and more convenient. These feeders are becoming quite popular, and there are many different models to choose from.

When deciding which automatic feeder would be right for you and your dog, you need to consider your pet's size and the capacity of the feeder, the type of food that you feed, and the amount and times that you feed him each day.

Now, to help you decide if the Portion Pro Rx Automatic Pet Feeder is the best choice, I've reviewed this product below. So, keep reading if you want all the details and find out if the Portion Pro Rx is a good value for the money.

Portion Pro Rx Automatic Pet Feeder

Portion Pro RxI briefly mentioned the patented RFID system used by this device. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is a system that uses radio waves to read information stored on a tag or chip. As you may have guessed, the Portion Pro Rx uses this technology to allow one dog to access a bowl of food while keeping another dog away from the meal.

As you will see in my video review above, the Portion Pro Rx comes with a tag that is programmed to open the feeder's door. All you have to do is program the feeder and attach the RFID chip to your dog's collar. When your pet comes into the range of the feeder, the automatic door opens. When he walks away, the door closes.

Programming the feeder is quite simple. I demonstrate how easy it is in my video review above. The Portion Pro Rx also comes with simple-to-follow instructions.

Portion Pro RxYou can program the amount of food to dispense, the number of meals to serve per day, and the times that you want the meals to be dispensed.

You can program the device to feed as little as 1/2 cup and as much as 6 cups of kibble per day. You can also divide the amount of food into 2, 3, 4, or 6 meals per day. Plus, the storage compartment can hold up to 30 cups of kibble!

The Portion Pro Rx has two different modes – open and closed. In Open Mode, the bowl door stays open at all times until an unassigned pet comes into range. In this mode, all pets that you do not want to have access to the food will need to wear RFID tags.

In Closed Mode, the bowl door stays closed at all times until an assigned pet comes into range. In this mode, the dog who is supposed to access the food will need to wear the RFID tag. The Portion Pro Rx comes with 1 RFID tag, but you can buy additional tags on Amazon for $19.95 each.

Portion Pro RxThe tags are lightweight and worked great for our Labrador and our Beagle. They are also water-resistant, which is a must for me. I don't want to have to keep my dogs inside when it rains or take the tag off if they go out in the rain.

The removable ceramic-coated bowl is easy to clean. The entire unit only measures 14.3″ x 12.2″ x 13.4″.

One thing that I don't like about the Portion Pro Rx is that it is AC-powered. That means that it needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet in order to work. So, if the power goes out, the feeder won't work.

You also have to use dry kibble in this feeder, which is true of pretty much every automatic pet feeder on the market. If your dog requires homemade, wet, or raw food, this (and most other feeders) will not work for your needs.

You can purchase the Portion Pro Rx on Amazon for $249.95. I know that sounds expensive, but it's pretty comparable to other automatic feeders. Most similar products do not allow you to control which dog eats the food. In my opinion, this product offers more technology for a similar price (cheaper in some cases). For that reason, the Portion Pro Rx is a good value for the money.
