Keeping your dog hydrated is essential for his overall health and well-being. You can't feel badly if you've forgotten to fill your pet's bowl once or twice – every pet owner has done it. Instead, do something to prevent it from happening again. Automatic dog water fountains, like the PetSafe Drinkwell Fountain, can hold a lot of water and keep it from becoming stagnant.
Most high quality dog water fountains have replaceable filters that remove impurities from the drinking water. They also aerate the water to keep it fresh at all times. Stagnant water is a breeding ground for bacteria, which exposes your pet to certain health risks.
Just like us, the majority of a dog's body weight is water. Unfortunately, some dogs don't drink enough water throughout the day. This can lead to dehydration. But the fresh, constantly circulating running water provided by a pet fountain will entice your Fido to drink extra water every day.
Most dogs will drink when they are thirsty if there is clean, fresh water available. However, pups don't drink as much as they should. Products like the PetSafe Drinkwell Fountain may entice him into increasing his daily water intake.
The general rule of thumb is that every dog should drink about 1 ounce of water for every 1 pound of their body weight each day.
Keep in mind that there are many variables that effect this. If your dog is extremely active, he'll need to drink more water. Likewise, if the weather is hot, your canine companion will need access to more water. Be sure to check with your vet if you are concerned about your dog's water intake for any reason.
PetSafe Drinkwell Fountain Review
Our dogs LOVE drinking from a fountain. When we travel and they are forced to use a traditional dog bowl, they all drink much less water.
The PetSafe Drinkwell Fountain has a foam filter that removes impurities from the drinking water. It is made of BPA-free plastic, which is an important feature to look for. According to the Mayo Clinic, “BPA stands for bisphenol A. BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics and resins since the 1960's. Some research has shown that BPA can seep into food or beverages from containers that are made with BPA. Exposure to BPA is a concern because of possible health effects of BPA on the brain and prostate gland of fetuses, infants and children. It can also affect children's behavior. Additional research suggests a possible link between BPA and increased blood pressure.”
The constant circulation of the fountain helps to prevent bacteria growth. You'll still need to clean the Drinkwell fountain at least once per week, but the company has made it as easy as possible.
As I demonstrate in my video review above, the fountain comes apart to make it easy to clean. This dog water fountain is also designed with no hard to clean nooks and crannies.
The adjustable water flow is my favorite feature of this fountain. There is an adjustable spout at the top of the fountain. You can shut the flow off, slow it down or open it up to flow as much as possible. I've never seen this feature on any other dog water fountain.
The photo above displays the dimensions of this fountain. It's not very big, and it only weighs about 4 pounds. You could easily take it with you while traveling, camping, etc…
I like the large capacity of the PetSafe Drinkwell Fountain as well. It holds 2 gallons of water. We have 3 dogs, and I don't have to worry about refilling their water dish multiple times each day. This fountain is a great option for multi-pet households. Even our cats enjoy drinking out of it!
This dog drinking fountain sells for $64.95 on Amazon at the time of this review. Compared to traditional dog water dishes, that sounds like a huge expense. However, compared to other dog drinking fountains, that's a very reasonable price. Most fountains with a similar capacity sell for more than $100, making this option a great value for the money.
