Low Protein Homemade Dog Food Recipe

If your dog is suffering with certain health conditions, your veterinarian may recommend putting him on a low protein diet. While there are commercial diets that are lower in protein than traditional commercial foods, making a low protein homemade dog food recipe will allow you to customize the food to your pet's unique individual needs.

Low protein diets for dogs are very tricky. It's a fine line between too much protein and not enough. A major diet change like this CANNOT be made without consulting your veterinarian or a canine nutritionist.

Most of the time, you'll have to purchase commercially made low protein dog food through your vet's office or with a prescription. These foods are all made differently, which makes it difficult to control the exact amount of protein that your dog receives.

By making your own low protein homemade dog food recipe, you can control exactly how much protein is in the food, and what type of protein. Low protein homemade dog food diets are often recommended for dogs with kidney failure or renal disease, and I've done a recipe on the best homemade dog food for kidney problems here, if that's what you need.

The following recipe makes about 21 cups of dog food. Depending on your pet's size, weight and dietary requirements, you should be able to get 10-15 servings of dog food from this homemade recipe. There are 21 grams of protein in every 2 cup serving.

Directions

As I explain in my video above, this low protein homemade dog food recipe is very easy to make. The hard part is the prep work. It's not so much difficult as it is time consuming.

First, you'll need to prepare the beans according to the instructions on the package. Our dogs aren't traditionally gassy, but pre-soaking the beans for 3 hours and then changing the water before preparing them is said to reduce flatulence in dogs.

Boil or steam the carrots until they are tender. Cut them into pieces that are appropriately sized for your dog. You also need to prepare the rice according to the instructions on the packaging, but this should only take about 10 minutes.

Chop the garlic or put it through a food processor. Once all your ingredients are prepared, just mix them all together in a large mixing bowl. Remember, this low protein homemade dog food recipe makes about 21 cups, so be sure you use a bowl that will hold that much food.

You can store the food in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days. As this recipe yields a lot of food, you can also store it in an airtight container in the freezer for 2-3 months.

I love this recipe, and I think it's perfect for people looking for alternative way to feed their dogs low protein diet. By now we know that prescription dog food isn't necessary for our canines, and either going with regular low protein dog food brands or making your own homemade dog food that's low in protein can be the cheapest and easiest option.
