Of course, even the most well-trained dog will have an accident from time to time. When learning how to get dog pee smell out of a carpet, there are a lot of commercial products available for purchase. I have tried and tested a lot of these products over the years, but I've only found one that stands out as affordable, effective, and safe for your pets.
Fizzion Pet Stain and Odor Remover is my go-to commercial product for how to get the dog pee smell out of the carpet. It is safe to use on furniture, flooring, carpet, and fabric. It uses the power of CO2 to remove all protein-based stains, which include dog urine. The power of CO2 breaks the proteins apart, and then safe-but-powerful surfactants (soap) are released to remove all evidence of a stain.
If you'd like more information about Fizzion, check out my detailed product review here. If you're going to purchase a commercial cleaning product, be sure to choose an enzymatic cleaner that will break down the particles of the urine to completely remove the stain and get rid of the odor. You don't want to waste money on a cleaner that just masks the smell.
Homemade Cleaners
When learning how to get dog pee smell out of carpet, many owners prefer an all-natural, homemade product over commercial cleaners. I've been raising dogs for decades, so I've had the opportunity to try many different homemade cleaners, and I have found 2 options that I highly recommend.
For the first, create a 50/50 mix of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray the urine stay and allow the vinegar mixture to sit on the stain for at least 15 minutes. You need to let it sit in order to allow time for the solution to penetrate through the carpet and down into the padding underneath.
After 15 minutes, blot the stain to remove as much of the excess vinegar mixture as possible. Cover the wet area with a thin layer of baking soda. Allow the baking soda to sit until it's completely dry. Now, vacuum the area very well.
For my second homemade dog urine stain eliminator, mix:
- 1.5 tbsp. 3% hydrogen peroxide
- 1 tbsp. dish soap
- 2 tbsp. baking soda
…to make a thick paste. If it is a large stain you may need to double or even triple this recipe. The paste to the stain and allow it to sit for at least an hour. After that, dab the paste off with a wet cloth.
Using the hottest water that you stand, wet a small cloth. Press the cloth firmly down on the stain. Repeat this process until the paste is completely gone. Dab the carpet with a dry cloth to remove excess water.
Keep in mind that set-in stains may need more than one application of these cleaning solutions. You may also need to allow the solutions to sit longer than recommended if the stains have been there for a while.
