Accidents happen. When our pets have accidents, it can be especially annoying. Cleaning carpeting and washing bedding is a hassle, but it can be easily done. Mattresses can't be thrown in the washing machine, and the urine is able to soak much deeper down into the center of the mattress material. For these reasons, learning how to get dog pee out of a mattress is more challenging.
There are dozens of products on the market to help remove dog urine smells from upholstery. Through trial-and-error, most pet owners find something that works eventually. However, these cleaning products cost money, and they're made with some pretty dangerous chemicals.
If you're looking to save money and time, I can teach you how to get dog pee out of a mattress quickly and easily. Most of the products I discuss in this guide may already be in your home. If you don't happen to have them on hand, they'll only cost a few dollars to pick up at the grocery store.
How To Get Dog Pee Out of A Mattress
To avoid urine from stinking up your mattress, you’ll want to soak it up as fast as possible. You’ll need several sheets of paper towel or some old rags that absorb a lot of liquid. Put on a pair of rubber gloves. Lay the towels down on the stain and firmly on top of them. Take up the wet towels and put down a new layer, repeating until liquid stops soaking through.
Next, you'll need to apply a vinegar solution to the area. Dissolve 2 tablespoons of baking soda into 1 cup of white vinegar. Put the mixture in a spray bottle and spray it directly over the stained area.
Let the solution dry completely. You may need to use the solution several times until the smell has completely disappeared. Be sure to let the solution dry completely before reapplying.
Another solution that you can use when learning how to get dog pee out of a mattress is 1 teaspoon of dish soap into 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide. You'll put this mixture into a spray bottle as well and apply it exactly as stated above.
The acidic nature of lemons also eliminates the smell of dog urine naturally. Personally, I also like the scent that lemons leave behind much better than the smell of vinegar. Another bonus to using this method is that dogs do not like the smell of citrus fruits. Not only will the lemon juice remove the urine odor, it will also help to naturally repel your pet from soiling the mattress again.
To apply this home remedy for pet urine stains, use a spray bottle of water to lightly wet the area. Cut a lemon in half, and rub the lemon directly onto the soiled area. Allow the area to dry completely. You may need to repeat this method a few times before the smell completely disappears.
