Keeping your house clean isn't easy. It is especially difficult if you have pets. If you've ever read the label of traditional cleaning products, you know that they are riddled with chemicals and toxic ingredients. DIY homemade laundry detergent and other cleaning products can be much safer for pets than commercial cleaning supplies.
In the past, I've shared a number of videos and written guides that mention a homemade laundry detergent that I use. I have had many followers ask me for the recipe, so here it is!
I started making this detergent when our first child was born. Switching to a commercial detergent made for sensitive skin was going to cost nearly double what I paid for regular commercial laundry detergent.
I had to test a few different recipes to find one that cleaned and freshened our clothing as well as the commercial products. This recipe is the one that I have been using for years. It's very effective, it's safe for dogs and is also cost effective for pet owners on a budget.
DIY Homemade Laundry Soap Safe for Dogs
Supplies You'll Need
- bandana or dust mask
- protective gloves
- 4 cups Borax detergent booster
- 2 cups baking soda
- 4 cups A&H washing soda (or any other)
- 4 cups grated lye-based bar soap (I use Fels Naptha)
- optional: 20 drops of essential oil
Directions
You will need to grate the bar soap. Before mixing the homemade laundry detergent, you'll need to put on the bandana to prevent inhalation of the dust. It's also best to wear protective gloves when mixing the ingredients.
Mix the Borax and baking soda thoroughly. Add the grated soap and mix it well. Stir in the essential oil fragrance of your choosing (this is optional).
Store the detergent in an airtight container. This laundry detergent is suitable for use in HE and front-load machines. It is also safe for septic tanks.
Use about 2 tablespoons of detergent per load. If you have trouble with the powder not dissolving, mix it with a small amount of hot water before adding it to the washing machine.
