Flaxseed is an excellent addition to any dog's diet. You can purchase whole flaxseeds, ground flaxseeds or flaxseed oil. No matter what form it's in, flaxseed is a great source of fiber and essential fatty acids. This quick and easy dog biscuit recipe offers a simple way to add this healthy ingredient to your dog's diet.
Most dog food and treat recipes that call for flaxseeds ask for ground seeds or oil. This is because flaxseeds often pass through the digest tract whole without being broken down. You can find ground and oil forms of the seed in some grocery stores and in virtually any natural food stores in your area.
Because it is made of mostly alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is an omega-3 fatty acid, flaxseed aids in skin and coat health. ALA also benefits the canine immune system and has anti-inflammatory properties.
I wanted to share this recipe today because it offers an easy way to add flaxseed into your pet's diet. The biscuits are easy to make, and they have a delicious peanut butter scent that will entice even the pickiest dog.

Homemade Flaxseed Dog Biscuit Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 cup oats
- 1/2 cup ground flaxseed
- 1/4 cup peanut butter
- 1/2 to 1 cup beef broth
Directions
Preheat your oven to 350°.
In a medium bowl, combine the flour, oats and flaxseed. Mix the ingredients until they are evenly combined. Add in the peanut butter and 1/2 of a cup of the beef broth. Mix well until the ingredients turn into a tough dough.
As you'll see in my video guide above, you may need to add some more beef broth if the dough does not completely combine. Add the broth slowly, as too much will make the dough sticky. If you do accidentally add too much, just add a small amount of water to firm up the dough.
Once the dough is formed, roll it out on a lightly floured surface. You want it to be about 1/4-inch thick. Now, you can cut out your dog biscuits. You can use cookie cutters if you choose or simply use a pizza cutter or butter knife to cut out small squares like I did.
Bake the biscuits in your 350° oven for about 20 minutes. You'll know when they are done because they will turn a golden brown color. Once the biscuits are cooled, you can serve them immediately.
Store leftover biscuits in an airtight container for 7-10 days. You can also freeze the dough before cooking for storage of up to 3 months. Either store the dough in an airtight container in the freezer or cut out the biscuits and freeze them on a cookie sheet.
Once the cut out biscuits are frozen, you can put them in an airtight container for storage in the freezer.
