The only way that you can be sure you know the exact ingredients in your dog's food or treats is by making them yourself. It takes time and research in order to make nutritionally balanced meals that will meet all of your dog's unique needs. For this reason, some pet owners choose to feed a commercial diet and add extra nutrients by feeding homemade treats.
Feeding a homemade dog food diet isn't as easy as most owners think. There is a lot of precise research that goes into creating just the right recipes for your dog. And, you have to update Fido's diet depending on his stage of life and current health condition.
Switching to homemade dog treats will save you time and money, plus you won't have to worry about any unhealthy ingredients. Did you know that hundreds of pet food products are recalled every year? Many of these products are treats that are recalled for contamination issues or due to harmful ingredients.
By making your own dog treats at home, you can ensure your dog’s health and safety. These homemade doggy donuts are adorable and would make a great gift. You can also serve them as a tempting treat for your own dog.

Homemade Doggy Donut Treats Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup skim milk
- 1/2 cup peanut butter
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 tbsp. baking powder
- 1/4 cup carob powder
- 1/4 cup water
Directions
Preheat your oven to 375°.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set it to the side. Beat the egg in a medium-size mixing bowl. Mix in the milk and peanut butter. Beat until the mixture is smooth.
Mix in the flour and baking powder with a fork. Knead the dough until it's completely blended.
Spread a very thin layer of flour on your work surface. Roll out the dough until it's about 1/2″ thickness. Using a small cup or circular cookie cutter, cut out the donuts.
You'll need a small circular object to cut out the inside ring of the donut. As you will see in my video guide above, I use an empty water bottle. It's the perfect size to make the donut hole, and all you have to do is squeeze the bottle gently to remove the dough.
Bake the donuts for 20 minutes. While they are cooking, you can whip up the frosting. In a small bowl combine the carob powder and water and whisk until smooth. If the frosting is too stiff, you can add a bit more water.
Once the donuts have had time to cool, drizzle on the frosting. These donuts would make the perfect gift for any canine on your holiday list. They would also be a great hostess gift for any pet owner that invites you into their home.
