Hot weather, cold weather, dry environments, rough terrain and even genetics can cause lesions and calluses on a dog's paws and nose. Using a healing balm can help to heal and moisturize these areas and protect them from future damage. This homemade dog paw balm is made with natural ingredients that are 100% safe for your pet.
Most pet owners overlook paw care until something happens that requires their attention. The truth is, you should be checking your dog's paws daily. Look for cuts and lesions. Check to see if they are becoming dry and cracked.
Apply this homemade dog paw balm everyday until the pads of your dog's feet and/or his nose are fully healed. Then apply it 2-3 times per week to keep them healthy. It's safe for you and your pet, and you may even notice the balm's nourishing properties helping your own hands.

Bees wax pellets are used to give the balm a thicker consistent and provide a protective coating for your dog's nose and paws. The layer of wax will lock in moisture and greatly reduce damage to the paws from outdoor elements or chemicals.
Coconut oil is a very powerful holistic remedy that is commonly used for skin and coat health. One study found significant improvements on skin hydration when applying coconut oil, and it was just as effective as some other well-known treatments.
Another study found how coconut oil fights negative effects of eczema, a skin condition that may cause itchiness, rashes and scaly skin in dogs. Topically applied coconut oil reduced all these factors, made the skin less dry and effectively treated eczema.
Shea butter is another ingredient that is well-known for its healing and moisturizing effects on skin. It is commonly used in many lotions and supplements for skin health in humans and pets.
All you have to do to make this homemade dog paw balm is melt the above ingredients in the microwave and stir until they are completely blended. As you'll see in my video guide above, I use a small, microwave safe container with a screw on lid. You can find the Rubbermaid containers I use here.
