Recipe: High Protein Homemade Dog Food

Providing the right nutrition for your dog is all about balanced nutrition. High protein homemade dog food isn't going to be right for every dog.

Be sure to discuss any dietary changes with your veterinarian or a trained canine nutritionist before making the switch.

Protein isn't just the building block of muscle. It also aids in nerve function and helps to build strong bones.

Every dog is unique, and that means their nutritional needs are unique too.

Some dogs will reap the benefits of eating a high protein dog food, but it could cause other dogs to have serious health complications.

Protein is best known as a building block of muscle. For this reason, many people think that all active dogs need a high protein diet.

This isn't always the case. The best thing you can do for your pet's health and well-being is to consult a veterinarian or a canine nutritionist to discuss your Fido's unique nutritional needs.

High Protein Homemade Dog Food Recipe

High Protein Homemade Dog Food

I use broccoli and carrots in this recipe. The best thing about making homemade meals for your pets is that you can substitute ingredients.

You can select ingredients that your pet prefers, ingredients that are in season (cheaper) or ingredients that will provide the unique nutrition that your dog needs.

Kale, sweet potatoes, green beans or Brussels sprouts would be great substitutions for the veggies in this recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds beef liver

  • 2 cups broccoli
  • 2 cups carrots
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup greek yogurt
  • 4 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 4 eggs

Instructions

This is a slow cooker recipe. I love slow cooker recipes, because I can dump all of the ingredients in and go about my day without having to worry about what I'm going to feed my dogs for dinner.

I also like preparing homemade dog food recipes in bulk, so I don't have to cook for my dogs every day.

You can prepare this recipe in bulk and store it according to the instructions below. I like to store it in individually packaged servings.

This way, I can plan my dog's meals ahead of time. I don't have to worry about measuring out the food before feeding, because it's already perfectly portioned.

I just take it out of the refrigerator, heat it up and serve it to my pups.

For this homemade dog food recipe, you're going to add the meat, rice, water, vegetables and eggs into the crock pot.

Cook the homemade dog food on low for 6 hours.

Once it has finished cooking, add the yogurt and coconut oil and mix until well combined.

As soon as the food has cooled, you can serve it to your dog.

Serving Size Recommendation: You can serve this dog food recipe to your pet as soon as it has cooled.

I recommend feeding about 1/2 cup of food for every 20-25 pounds of body weight.

This recommendation is for 2 servings per day. So, a 25-pound dog would eat about 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup in the evening.

This is just a guideline. Some dogs, like working dogs and very active breeds, will need more calories than this. Lazier pets and senior dogs may not need as many.

It's best to consult your veterinarian about the appropriate serving size for your dog.

They will also help you evaluate the meal to ensure it meets your pet's unique nutritional needs.

If necessary, they will assist you in choosing the best supplements and/or multivitamins to add.

How to store: You can store the leftover high protein dog food in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days or freeze them, and they’ll keep for up to 3 months.

Remember that this dog food recipe includes no preservatives, so it won't last nearly as long as commercial dog food.
