Recipe: High-Fiber Dog Food Meal with Ground Turkey

High-fiber diets are usually recommended for dogs with loose stool or irregular bowel movements. This type of diet can also help alleviate constipation, diarrhea, and anal gland problems. This high-fiber dog food recipe does not offer balanced nutrition for all dogs, so you may need to add supplements to make it balanced for your pup's needs.

Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that resists enzymatic digestion while being processed in your dog's small intestine. It is most commonly found in the cell walls of plants and grains, but almost every source of carbohydrates will contain at least traces of fiber.

When searching for a high-fiber dog food recipe, some ingredients to look for include:

  • bran
  • brown rice
  • lentils
  • beet pulp
  • corn
  • pumpkin

High-fiber diets help keep your dog feeling fuller for longer, so they can also help your pooch shed extra pounds that he needs to drop. Studies have even shown that insoluble fiber has a positive effect on diabetic control in canines. Likewise, a high-fiber diet can also be beneficial for colon health in canines.

High Fiber Dog Food Recipe

High Fiber Dog Food RecipeIngredients

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 medium sweet potato (cubed)
  • 2 cups DRY brown rice
  • 1/2 cup lentils
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin
  • 1 cup spinach (chopped)
  • 2 tsp. olive oil

Directions

I used my Cosori 8-in-1 pressure cooker to prepare this high-fiber dog food recipe. I use it on the slow cooker setting, but you could decrease the cooking times and use a pressure cooker to make this recipe if you'd like.

First, place the turkey, chicken, and water into your slow cooker. Cover and cook the meat on high for about 4 hours. At this time, you should be able to shred the chicken easily and break the ground turkey into small pieces.

High Fiber Dog Food RecipeAdd the sweet potato, rice, lentils, pumpkin, spinach, and olive oil to the slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 2 more hours. When the recipe is finished cooking, be sure to stir all of the ingredients together until everything is thoroughly mixed.

Once the dog food has cooled, you can feed it to your pup. The recommended serving size is about 1/2 cup for every 20-25 pounds of body weight, and you'll feed 2 servings per day. Keep in mind that this is just a recommendation. Your veterinarian can examine your dog and give you the most accurate portion size recommendation.

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 5-7 days. You can also store them in an airtight container in the freezer for 2-3 months.
