Recipe: Healthy Homemade Dog Food

Finding homemade dog food recipes is easy. Finding a healthy homemade dog food recipe is not as easy as you may think. Just because someone posts it on their blog and tells you that it's been recommended by a veterinarian does not mean that a recipe is going to be a good choice for your pet.

Every dog has his own unique nutritional requirements. Even dogs of the same age, sex and breed still have different needs, because their overall health and well-being is different. Some dogs are overweight, while others could stand to gain a few pounds. Dogs in different stages of life need different nutrition.

Healthy Homemade Dog Food Recipe for Any TimeDogs also have individual nutritional needs based on their activity level. For example, a dog that stays indoors all day while his owner is away at work will not burn nearly as many calories as a working dog that is on the move all day long.

Where does your dog fit in?

That's a question that only a trained professional can answer. The recommended serving size for this meal is about 1 cup per 25 pounds of weight per day. Ideally, this should be split into two portions (one in the morning and one in the evening).

However, before feeding your dog this healthy homemade dog food recipe or any other homemade diet, it's important to check with your veterinarian or a trained canine nutritionist. These experts can examine your dog, ask a few questions about his lifestyle, and then recommend the appropriate diet that will meet his nutritional needs without giving too many extra calories or leaving out any necessary vitamins and minerals.

Very Healthy Homemade Dog FoodIngredients

  • 1 pound of beef stew meat
  • 1 sweet potato
  • 1/2 cup chopped carrots
  • 1/2 cup peas
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup water (give or take)

Directions

First, microwave the sweet potato until it's soft (about 4-5 minutes). Cut it into bite-sized pieces and then set it aside. Now, cook the stew meat in a frying pan with about 1 tablespoon of coconut oil to prevent sticking. Cook the pieces until they are well done.

I have a Labrador, so I leave the stew meat cut as it is when I buy it. If you have a small or teacup breed, you will need to cut the pieces into smaller bits.

When they're finished cooking, remove the stew meat pieces from the drippings and set them aside. Heat the drippings on low, and slowly add the flower and water while whisking continuously to create a thick gravy. You may need to add more than a 1/2 cup of water depending on the amount of drippings that are left over after cooking the meat.

You'll need to store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator, and they'll keep for 5-7 days. Now that you've got a nice gravy, add the cooked meat, sweet potato, carrots and peas to the pan. Stir to coat the ingredients with the gravy. Cook the healthy homemade dog food recipe for another 10 minutes until the carrots are tender.

Once the food has cooled, you can serve it to your pooch. You'll need to store the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator, and they'll keep for 5-7 days. You can also store this healthy homemade dog food recipe in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months.
