Home Dog Food Recipes Recipe: Healthy Dog Cake with Peanut Butter

Recipe: Healthy Dog Cake with Peanut Butter

These days, us pet owners are celebrating our dogs' birthdays more than ever. You can buy a cake for a dog, but they won't offer the nutrition that this healthy dog cake recipe does. It's probably cheaper to make this cake, too. With just a few affordable ingredients, it's simple and budget-friendly.

Personally, it's always fun for me to spoil my dogs every once in a while, and they sure deserve it. As mentioned, you can buy dog cake mixes (like Puppy Cake or Lazy Dog) but this dog cake recipe for a doggy birthday party comes with a personal touch, and it would make a great snack for a puppy play date, too.

When you're shopping for the necessary ingredients, I recommend using organic, natural ingredients whenever possible. One of the best things about making your dog's birthday cake yourself from scratch is that you can leave out all of the unnecessary preservatives and artificial ingredients found in commercial products, and pack it with nutrition.

You can feed your dog a small piece of this cake as a treat. Just remember that it will add extra calories to your pet's diet. You should only feed your pooch one small piece per day, and ideally, only on special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup of flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/8 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup apple sauce
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 egg

Instructions

Preheat oven to 350˚F.

Mix the flour and baking soda together in a small bowl, and set them aside. Mix all of the other ingredients in a medium-size mixing bowl. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Mix until a smooth batter forms.

Pour the batter into a well greased 8″ cake pan. Bake in 350˚F oven for 20-25 minutes. While the cake is baking, you can prepare frosting if you would like to top the cake.

To make healthy frosting for dogs, I mix 1/2 cup of plain yogurt and 1/4 cup of peanut butter. You can frost the cake once it has cooled. I also like to add small dog treats or some sliced fruits/vegetables for decoration.
