If you're worried that the diet that you're feeding your dog is not providing her with the adequate nutrition that she needs, adding a food topper is a great way to include additional nutrients into her diet. You can purchase food toppers from your local pet store, or you can make a customized food topper at home.
If your dog needs more protein, you can use organ meat or other high protein sources to provide that in a food topper. Perhaps she needs added calcium in her diet; that's not a problem! Just add some cottage cheese or calcium rich veggies like broccoli or kale to her food.
I know what you're thinking, “My dog would never eat kale or broccoli if I added it to her kibble!” That's where a quick and easy recipe like this one comes in. You can add these ingredients to a tasty smoothie and use it as a food topper or a quick treat.

Doggy Fruit and Vegetable Smoothie Recipe
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup chopped dog-friendly fruit (I used apples and bananas)
- 1/2 cup chopped dog-friendly vegetables (I used canned pumpkin and beets)
- 1/4 cup fruit juice (NOT grape juice)
- 1 tbsp. cottage cheese
- 4 tbsp. PLAIN Greek yogurt
Directions
It doesn't get much easier than this recipe. All you need is your ingredients and a blender or food processor. I used my food processor, and you'll see the ingredients that I used pictured above.
Remember, this recipe can be made to cater to your pet's unique nutritional needs. Speak to your vet about the nutritional requirements of your dog and what ingredients or supplements you could add to your smoothie recipe to help your canine companion.
In your food processor (or blender) add all of the ingredients and blend until they form a puree. Think of the consistency of a smoothie or milkshake. Now, it's ready to serve if you want to add it as a topper to your dog's food.
Simply pour about 1/8 of a cup of the smoothie on the top of your dog's food at every meal. If you'd rather serve it as a treat, you can do that too. Simply serve 1/8 of a cup in a small bowl twice a day.
As you'll see in my video guide above, I like to freeze the smoothie in small silicone cups to form hard, cool treats that our dogs love! You can do this too, if you think your dog will enjoy them. This is especially great to do during the hot summer months when Fido might need to cool down after a walk or fetch session.
Storing frozen treats is easy – in the freezer of course! They'll keep for at least 2 months this way. If you choose to leave the smoothie in a liquid form, just store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
