Frozen dog treats are a great way to help your pup beat the heat during the summer months. I make them year round for an after exercise snack or just to feed as an alternative to traditional biscuit treats. Our dogs love sweet potato, and frozen dog treats are one of their favorite snacks.
Making your own homemade dog treats isn't as difficult as you may think. With a bit of internet research, you can find easy-to-make treat recipes that use ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen cupboards.
When you use ingredients that you select yourself, you can be sure that the homemade dog treats you are feeding Fido are healthy and safe for him. Try to select the best quality ingredients. I always look for organic, all-natural products that aren't made with any fillers or artificial ingredients and colors.
Frozen Dog Treats with Sweet Potato Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup mashed sweet potato
- 1/4 cup low-fat milk
- 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
Directions
These sweet potato frozen dog treats only use 3 ingredients, and they're extremely simple to make. All you need to do is add all of the ingredients to a medium-sized mixing bowl. Once the mixture is thoroughly combined, you can pour it into molds.
As you will see in my video guide above, I use silicone cupcake molds, but you can use traditional cupcake papers if you'd like. I use the silicone option because the treats are easy to remove once frozen. If you use cupcake papers, I recommend using the foil papers and taking them out of the freezer about 5 minutes before serving.
The liquid freezes to the paper, and if you try to remove it when the treats are fresh from the freezer you'll leave a lot of paper stuck to the treat. The silicone molds prevent that, and you can usually find them for just a few dollars at any department store.
Once the treats are frozen you can remove them from the molds and place them in an airtight container. They'll keep in the freezer for 8-10 weeks. I usually make a large batch (4 times the amount of this recipe). This recipe yields about 10 large dog treats or 15 small/medium dog treats.
I make a quadruple batch and store them in a large container. That way I have enough sweet potato frozen dog treats to last our three pups quite a while. It saves on having to make treats every week or two.
