Every dog owner has had the unpleasant experience of smelling their pet’s foul breath. It’s not something that we enjoy, but it comes with the territory. We love our dogs' stinky breath, but wouldn’t it be nice if you didn’t have to deal with the disgusting smell every time you bent down to pat your canine companion?

A new product called Pooch Smooch claims it can rid your pet of bad breath simply by allowing your dog to lick up a tasty treat. Could it be that easy? According to the company’s website, 90% of the bacteria that causes bad breath are located on your dog’s tongue, and that’s what this product focusses on.

This revolutionary 360˚ dog tongue cleaner has a very simple design. The Pooch Smooch brush has more than 1,500 bacteria-cleaning bristles and 4 scrapers that wipe away bacteria and store it in the brush's grooves. It works for any size dog, and the brush head easily comes off and can be put through the dishwasher. The brush is also BPA-free.

The brush comes with Pooch Paste, which you can buy separately if you run out. The paste is all-natural and enhanced with grapefruit seed extract. It’s specifically formulated to fight the bacteria found in canines' mouths.

The company says it uses DentazymeTM, a proprietary enzyme blend that reduces odor-causing bacteria, contributes to healthy digestion, and even aids in removing plaque and tartar buildup from teeth.

You can purchase Pooch Smooch for $20 online and in select retail stores. The initial package comes with 1 brush and 2 packages of Pooch Paste. The instructions tell you to apply a 2-inch-wide strip of paste to the brush and let your dog lick it off. The natural licking action will clean the bacteria on his tongue and in turn freshen his breath.

As I mentioned, you can purchase more Pooch Paste separately, and it comes in four flavors that the company guarantees your dog will love:

  • Peanut butter
  • Chicken
  • Steak
  • Bacon Cheeseburger

There is a survey on the Pooch Smooch website that says most dogs prefer the chicken flavor paste, but steak is a close second. Pooch Paste refills come in 2 packs for $9.99. You can also subscribe to receive monthly refills delivered to your door with free shipping.

Overall, this isn’t an overly expensive way to help keep your pet’s breath smelling fresh. The product may not work if your pet isn’t treat motivated though, so keep that in mind. Pooch Smooch does offer a money back guarantee if you’re not satisfied with the product.

Although the marketing is a bit deceiving, you must remember that this product is not a substitute for brushing your pet’s teeth. Poor dental health can lead to much more severe health issues, including heart disease. All pet owners should take the time to brush their dog’s teeth daily, and products like dental chews or this Pooch Smooch cannot be substituted for regular brushing.

If you don’t have time to brush your dog’s teeth every day, products like these can be a great way to promote proper dental health between brushings. There are other products on the market, including gels and water additives, that are said to help break up the plaque and tartar buildup on your pet’s teeth, but none of them focus on the bacteria located on your pet’s tongue the way that the Pooch Smooch does.

This is a very interesting product, but without testing it myself, I cannot vouch for its effectiveness. If you’ve tried Pooch Smooch, please let us know what you thought of it in the comments below.
