If you're tired of seeing too much negativity online, here's a story about hope where a Doberman dog sniffs out an organ donor to save the owner's life.
We truly don't deserve the goodness in dogs, and the story of Lucy Humphrey and her dog Indie will prove it.
Lucy, 44, from Caerphilly, had been battling Lupus for 15 years before needing a guardian angel for a life-saving kidney transplant.
In 2019, Lucy was given the horrible news that she only had five years to live without a transplant.
Three years had gone by, and still no sign of a suitable donor. But Lucy didn't lose hope. She was optimistic that she would find the right donor.
Little did she know that her guardian angel was beside her all along.
It turns out Indie, her Doberman, would be the one to find her the perfect match.
This happened on a beach day in Barry, South Wales, in 2019. Lucy and her partner Cenydd Owen, were out with their two Dobermans when Indie suddenly became intrigued with another beachgoer.
And that stranger was Katie James, a 40-year-old woman who became Lucy's kidney donor.
During this beautiful day at the beach, Lucy and Cenydd had parked their caravan and prepared a cookout, but Indie became genuinely fascinated with Katie.
“Indie went over like three times, back and forward to her,” Humphrey said in the Daily Record interview.
“She was minding her own business, campervanning on her own. Eventually, Cenydd went over to apologize, and we got chatting and invited her over to our barbecue.”
Katie assured them that she didn't mind Indie's attention. And when Humphrey said that she couldn't drink since she was on dialysis, the trio started to talk.
“Katie came over with some drinks, and she offered me some, but Cenydd explained that I couldn't drink as I was on dialysis. She was like, ‘Oh, what for?' And he said that I was waiting for a kidney transplant.”
Katie then revealed that she had just registered as a kidney donor.
Do you believe in destiny? Or is this just some odd coincidence? Either way, the stars finally lined up for Lucy.
Lucy and Katie swapped numbers and contacted a donor coordinator the next day.
Katie then took all the required tests, and she was a perfect match! According to Lucy, a surgeon even said it's a one in 22 million chance of finding the perfect match.
The successful transplant occurred on October 3, 2022, at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.
Katie said:
“I feel really lucky that I got to know Lucy, I know that it has worked and I know that she's out there living her life. To me, there's been no negative to it whatsoever.
“I feel really proud of myself, I get embarrassed sometimes though as every time I'm out with my nan she will tell a stranger ‘oh my granddaughter donated a kidney.
“It's the best thing I've ever done and I feel so proud of myself and my family are proud of me.”
Lucy is still amazed at her Doberman Indie, who managed to locate the perfect kidney donor for her.
Lucy's partner Cenydd added:
“We ended up going to Barry by total chance, meeting Katie by total chance, and Lucy's ended up with a kidney. We want to show that there is always hope for people.
“Never give in, because you never know, we weren't even going to go to the beach that day. There's a lot of good people out there.”
