Recipe: Cheesy Yogurt Dog Treats

I know some people are sensitive to it, but I just love dairy products. Cheese, yogurt and ice cream are some of my favorites! I thought my dogs might like it too, and I was not surprised. They drool over these cheesy yogurt dog treats.

Most of the time you can substitute ingredients in homemade dog treat recipes. If your dog isn't a fan of chicken, just substitute beef. If he can't have eggs you can leave them out and add a little extra water.

Unfortunately, if your dog is intolerant to dairy, these treats just won't work for him.

If your pooch enjoys a delicious dairy treat, he's sure to love these! They are a crispy biscuit treat that can be made in any shape or size you want. I make some smaller treats for our little Beagle and some larger treats for our Labrador and Boxer. You could even cut them into fun shapes and give them as a gift!

Cheesy Yogurt Dog Treats Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 cup quick oats
  • 3/4 cup cornmeal
  • 2 crushed beef stock cubes
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1/2 cup water

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350°.

In a large mixing bowl, combine the oats, cornmeal and crushed beef stock cubes. Add the warm water and stir until the mixture is completely moist. You may need to let the beef stock absorb some water and then crush up any large chunks.

Let this mixture stand for 10 minutes. Next, beat the egg and add that to the mixture. Add the yogurt and shredded cheese as well, and then blend until it's well mix.

Stir in the flour slowly. You'll notice the dough start to get firm. It may be a bit crumbly once you've added all the flour. If so, add a little bit of the water. Only add as much water as needed. You don't want the dough to be too sticky. No worries if it does become sticky, just add a pinch of flour.

Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface. you want it to be about 1/4-inch thick. You can cut biscuits out with cookie cutters or use a pizza cutter or butter knife to cut the dough into small pieces.

Now, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the cheesy yogurt dog treats on the sheet. Bake in the 350° oven for 30-35 minutes. Turn the oven off, but leave the biscuits inside until the oven is cool. This will dry them out a little bit more, which will make them last longer.

Homemade dog treats don't have the preservatives that are contained in commercial dog treats. You can store these treats in an airtight container for 7-10 days. You can also freeze the dough before baking and store it in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months.
