Proper nutrition is the key to keeping your dog healthy. The quality of your pet's food is directly related to his health. For example, if your dog is very active, he'll need more nutrients and calories than the average canine. Bully Max Dog Food not only offers a classic dog food that is formulated for most dogs, but also a high performance blend that is made for active and working canines.
The American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) sets the standardized nutritional requirements for commercial dog food products in the USA. However, highly active dogs (and particularly canine athletes) usually have higher nutritional requirements than the AAFCO standards.
That means that most standard commercial dog foods do not meet the nutritional needs of very active dogs. Bully Max has created their High Performance Dog Food with working and highly active dogs in mind. As I mentioned, they also offer a classic dog food that is suitable for most other canines.
Did my dogs enjoy the food? Are the kibbles large or small? How do these dog foods compare with similar commercial products? Find out all of this information and more in my detailed review below.
Bully Max Dog Food Dry Kibble Review
Bully Max uses natural meat to offer filler-free dog foods made with high quality ingredients. The ingredients are sourced globally, but the company is very transparent about what ingredients are used and where each one is sourced. All of the information on the ingredients and where they’re sourced is on the company’s website.
Bully Max High Performance Formula
This dog food is available in 3 formulas:
- 31% protein/25% fat
- 30% protein/20% fat
- 25% protein/11% fat
…and all 3 formulas are suitable for all breeds and sizes.
Bully Max High Performance Dog Food packs more calories per cup than any other food in its class. The 30/20 blend packs a whopping 535 calories per cup! Our dogs don't need a high-performance food, because they're typical house dogs. But, I still wanted to do some research on this diet and see if our pups would enjoy the taste.
As you can see in my video review above, all three of our dogs love this kibble! Our Labrador will typically eat just about anything, but our Beagle is much pickier. I feed our dogs fresh food, so our Beagle usually isn't a big fan of kibble. I was pleasantly surprised to find her enjoying this kibble as soon as her bowl hit the floor.
This kibble is made with 100% natural, human-grade ingredients. Chicken meal is the first ingredient. According to the company's website, “…chicken meal is made by taking fresh chicken and removing the excess water inside. It results in a highly nutritious form of chicken with nearly 300% more protein than fresh chicken…”
The kibbles of this food are smaller than a dime. This is great for our small dogs, and would also benefit senior pets or dogs with dental health issues. It is formulated for all life stages including puppies over 4 weeks of age and pregnant or nursing bitches.
This dog food is also corn, soy and wheat free. Bully Max pet foods are made in the USA. As with most high quality dog foods, this isn't the cheapest option on the market. Depending on the formula that you choose, you can buy 5 pounds of this food for $18.97-$29.77.
Obviously, this dog food isn't for every dog. If your pooch doesn't need the extra calories, this food could actually cause him to gain weight and take in too many nutrients. If your dog needs a more traditional diet, Bully Max also offers a Classic Formula.

Bully Max Classic Formula
The classic formula is available in dehydrated or kibble options, as well as freeze-dried food toppers. It is much cheaper than the performance formula, retailing for $19.99 for a 12-pound bag.
This dog food is slow cooked to preserve nutrients. It is marketed as an alternative to raw food. Bully Max Classic food is fortified with branched-chain amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins. When added to a high protein dog food (like this one), it helps to fortify your dog's diet with additional amino acids that can help maintain muscle mass.
Flaxseed and salmon oil are added to this dog food for an uncommon source of Omega 3 fatty acids. These fatty acids aid in skin and coat health and support a healthy circulatory system. Probiotics are also included in this recipe to promote healthy digestion.
Similar to the Performance blend, the Classic formula is made with no corn, wheat or soy. It also has no artificial colors or flavors and no animal by-products.
Before switching to this food (or any high performance dog food) I would recommend having a conversation with your veterinarian to figure out how many calories per day your dog should be eating.
If you're looking for a high protein dog food made with high quality ingredients, Bully Max is worth a look. Switching to this food may add to your monthly pet bills, but any commercial dog food of the same quality will be in a similar price bracket.
