Our dogs are anatomically awkward when it comes to fitting shoes and keeping them on. Although there are plenty of dog shoes on the market, if you start your shopping blindly, you’ll find yourself frequently disappointed.
We've tested a number of dog booties, and in an effort to save you some time (and money), we’ve put together a list of the 50 best dog shoes of all time below.
Before we set off on your journey to pick the next pair of best dog shoes, make sure you know how to measure your dog for booties and how to put dog shoes on your pup.
How to Measure a Dog for Booties
Begin with measuring the circumference of the dog's paw using a fabric tape measure.
Measure the widest part of the paw (not down by the toes or up by the ankle).
Consider also the length of dog booties, which will depend on what you use the boots for — hiking, snow, rain, hot summer asphalt, etc.
For the height of dog booties, measure from the tip of your dog’s toes up his leg.
For more details on how to measure dogs for booties, check out Samantha's written and video guide here.
How to Put Boots on a Dog
Once you measure your dog and pick the right dog shoes for your pup from the list below, the hardest part is already done.
Depending on your pooch, putting shoes on the dog for the first time can be a little complicated.
Give your dog time to sniff and be around the shoes.
When he's comfortable, it's recommended to put the shoes on a dog when he's standing and start with the front shoes first.
- Straddle your dog facing his head, both front boots ready;
- Pick up the paw and slip it inside the shoe;
- Before you fasten, ensure the dog's paw is flat on the floor and adjusted;
The same technique applies to putting dog shoes on his rear paws. You can also put the shoes on the dog while he's lying down.
If you do this, make sure to stand your pooch and check for adjustment of doggy shoes on the floor before you fasten and secure them.
To see both standing and lying down methods, check out this guide.
With this out of the way, let's take a look at the 50 best dog shoes of all time out there.
50 Best Dog Shoes
1. QUMY Dog Boots Waterproof Shoes for Dogs
Price: $28.99
The first on the list of best dog shoes is one of the most popular options out there. You can grab these dog shoes in black, green, orange, or red to coordinate with every collar, but perhaps most important is that they’re tough. If you’re looking for waterproof shoes that give your dog plenty of traction but can’t afford some of the “luxury” name brands in dog shoes, these are a great go-to.
2. Muttluks Original Fleece-Lined Dog Boots
Price: $60.00
Available in black, blue, green, orange, pink, purple, and red, these dog boots are less of a boot and more like a slipper sock. Each boot has a warm fleece lining, which is perfect for winter walks, and the leather soles offer a more hardwearing base than a traditional “grippy sock.” This is an affordable, quick solution for potty breaks in the cold, but since the shoe lacks any real structure, we don’t advise using it for more intensive exercise.
3. Muttluks Mutt Trackers Dog Boots
Price: $30.00
If you’re looking for top-of-the-line dog shoes of the highest quality (and don't mind the price tag), then you can’t go wrong with Muttluks. The Grip Trex All-Terrain boots are designed for tough, rugged territory, but the thick textured sole of the boot ensures that your dog can get a grip while protecting their feet from the elements. We love everything about these boots, if we’re being honest. They’re breathable, hardwearing, protective, and simple to put on and take off.
4. Petacc Dog Boots
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
At $25.99 for four dog boots, these are a great budget option for protecting your pup’s feet while hiking. For regular walks, these are the best, most affordable dog shoes for pet owners on a tight budget. We don’t recommend using them for winter walks since the mesh body can lead to chilly feet, but the long-lasting hard soles are still a great asset for walking in the snow if you have no other options available.
5. Candy Colors Rain Shoes for Dogs
Price: $10.99
These dog boots get great reviews from pet parents, but we have to admit that we weren’t convinced when we first saw them – they look like balloons! Made from silicone, though, these boots are affordable, lightweight, and perfect for waterproof protection of feet! Just keep in mind it’s not ideal for slippery, icy surfaces.
6. KONG High-Top Neoprene Boots for Dogs
Price: $29.12
We found that pet parents have mixed reviews over the Kong high-top neoprene boots, but we actually like them, and they deserve a spot on any list of best dog shoes. The neoprene boot is lightweight, and the Velcro keeps the booties tight enough that they don’t come loose over time. The boots do have rubber bottoms, but the grip is lacking compared to some other boots on our list.
7. Petilleur Breathable Dog Hiking Shoes
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
These dog boots are made with a Lycra type of material, making them flexible, but what we love the most about them is the thick soles with an incredible grip! We love these for hiking and tackling tough surfaces, as well as for winter wear. They're far less popular among pet owners, mostly because the company is newer, but they're quickly gaining traction and becoming one of the favorite cheap best dog shoes out there.
8. Ultra Paws Durable Boots for Dogs
Price: $40.95
If you’re looking for indoor traction and warmth, then these doggy booties are a good option. For outdoor walks, these could be ideal for dog parks, dog pools, snow, and grass runs either in hot or cold temperatures. This can also be effective in keeping them from licking natural dog paw balm, cream, or soother.
9. Ruffwear Summit Trex Boots for Dogs
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
Ruffwear is by far our favorite brand for dog boots, and the Summit Trex booties are a great solution for all-around use. As the above-mentioned Ruffwear best dog shoes, these are also high quality but cheaper. The sole is tough enough to handle the heat and textured enough to grip snow and ice. Just keep in mind that these are sold in sets of two, so if you need all four (a better choice for senior dogs or dogs unsteady on their feet), you have to pick up two sets.
10. Ruffwear Polar Trex Boots for Dogs
Price: $49.95
And yet another set of dog boots from Ruffwear. These are warmer pet boot designs for winter traction. If you need something for rough winters, there's nothing on the market that's better or higher quality than these Ruffwear winter dog booties. However, mind the price tag since, on this list of best dog shoes, it's the highest one. Overall, we don’t just love that these boots are nice to look at and have great soles, but we also love that they’re breathable while still keeping your pup’s feet warm.
11. Muttluks Original Fleece-Lined Dog Boots
Price: $65.99
Muttluks fleece-lined dog boots lack the solid structure of “boots,” but this can be a blessing depending on how finicky your dog is about wearing shoes. If you have to put on and take off their shoes multiple times before getting it right, these are a better option, and they’re perfect for colder fall days.
12. Canine Equipment Ultimate Trail Dog Boots
Price: $58.95
These quite expensive best dog shoe options are another one of our favorites for winter walking and tackling rough terrain, though not as popular as Ruffwear. The soles are solid rubber and keep paws protected, but what we like most is that the Velcro straps for these are actually part of the shoe, so they’re not easily lost!
13. All For Paws All Road Dog Boots
Price: $47.69
These dog boots look quite comfortable when worn, and better still, they’re made from eco-friendly materials! These can be tough to get on your pup's paws, but they incorporate reflective material into the design, which is a huge plus if you tend to walk after dark quite often.
14. Itty Bitty Muttluks All-Weather Dog Boots
Price: $60.00
Unlike the other Muttluks on our best dog shoes list, these are an all-weather design that has added protection on the soles of the boots as well as the toes. What we’re not thrilled about is that the added protection is leather rather than rubber. While we prefer rubber bottom soles, the leather is quite hard-wearing, and they allow for better aeration.
15. Petoga Couture Dorian All Weather Booties
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
If you’re going for bright colors, you can’t go wrong with the bright pink or blue design of these dog boots. These, too, have a leather sole and toe protector, but they also have reflective tightening strips, a waterproof design, and a flexible neck, which means that they fit better to your dog’s feet.
16. Bark Brite All Weather Neoprene Dog Boots
Price: $30.99
Bark Brite dog boots are made from neoprene with a plush, warm lining. These are a great solution for colder days and rainy days, but we don’t recommend using them in warmer weather; there are better options for that above and below on this list of best dog shoes. The problem with this option in summer is that the boot lining can lead to heat buildup, which can become a problem when the temperatures are high.
17. Zack & Zoey High Top Boots for Dogs
Price: $5.60
These dog boots are similar to the KONG neoprene high-top best dog shoes mentioned above but feature a front zipper and adjustable Velcro straps for a custom fit. The rubber soles are great support and protection, but our favorite feature of these boots is that they provide extra ankle protection, which is ideal if you tend to hike or hunt with your dog in rougher terrain.
18. East Side Classic Sherpa Dog Boots
Price: $29.99
If you’re concerned about fashion as well as function, the East Side Collection dog boots are a good choice for you. The back of the shoes is unzipped for easy on and off, and they provide plenty of additional warmth. When it comes to quality boots, you’ll be hard-pressed to find better boots for this price range.
19. HiPaw Breathable Mesh Dog Boots
Price: $14.99
We recommend going with these if you’re only looking for indoor dog booties, warmer weather boots, or water shoes for your pup. The mesh top allows your dog’s feet to breathe without overheating, but the durable rubber sole keeps feet fully protected. We also can’t help but love how affordable these are!
20. Adarl Waterproof Rain Dog Booties
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
When we first saw these dog booties, we weren’t convinced, especially considering the price tag. To be honest, they look similar to something you would make for yourself on a sewing machine. That said, they’re actually pretty decent boots and worth a place on the best dog shoes list because of affordability. The toggle is much more efficient than Velcro straps for tightening the boots, and the soles are textured for great traction.
21. Muttluks Hott Doggers Dog Boots
Price: $23.00
The Muttluks Hott Doggers are only a great idea for indoor use because they’re made from soft fleece. The non-skid soles prevent slipping, and the fact that they’re completely washable is a huge plus. The only negative? You have to take these off when you head outdoors for potty breaks!
22. Colorfulhouse Nonslip Outdoor Dog Socks
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
These don’t quite qualify as doggy booties; they’re more non-slip socks, but they’re still a great solution for indoor use. The base and toes of the socks are completely coated in silicone to prevent slipping, and they’re one of the better traction solutions for older pups. Although the manufacturer does recommend these for outdoor use, we don’t agree; stick to indoor use only.
23. HiPaw Summer Breathable Dog Boot
Price: $19.99
The Walkin’ Dog Boots are another softer pet boot that can be great for getting the boots on and off more easily, but the thick sole is rubber and offers full paw protection. They are a very popular option and one of the most reviewed among the rest of the best dog shoes mentioned here. We love that the adjustable Velcro straps come with a plastic clip for less slippage and that each boot has a back slit for faster on and off!
24. Ultra Paws Rugged Dog Boots
Price: $40.95
And yet another product from Ultra Paws, these dog booties are a good option for dogs that don’t like to hold still for putting on shoes on their paws! The flexible shell slips over your dog’s feet quickly, and the Velcro tightening straps stop them from coming loose over time. We like these boots for any time use, but they are ideal for water use.
25. Petbobi Waterproof Dog Boots
Price: $19.99
Despite having a really unusual name, the Haveget dog boots are another one of the affordable best dog shoes and a good option for water play and snow days. The neoprene exterior keeps feet dry, the bright color makes them a great addition for your hunting dog, and the tough, non-slip soles provide plenty of protection, too!
26. GabeFish Anti Slip Winter Dog Boots
Price: $9.99
We’re not sure if pet parents love these dog boots more for fashion than they do for function, but they still get the job done. The suede exterior and Sherpa interior keep feet warm and dry, and the solid rubber sole is pretty durable. These are NOT the solution for any type of warm weather exercise, however, since they will lead to your dog’s feet getting extremely overheated!
27. RoyalCare Paw Protector Dog Booties
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
The RoyalCare dog boots are similar to some of the other boots on our list of best dog shoes, but they come with a different color scheme, which we happen to like. The white sole and silver shoe is something different, while the mesh outside of the shoe makes sure that your dog’s feet can breathe. We recommend picking these ones up for fall or spring activities since they’re not quite warm enough for winter use.
28. Petbobi Breathable Dog Boots
Price: $19.99
These dog boots actually look like miniature shoes with their thick soles and colorful shells. The tab around the top keeps the shoe from falling off your dog’s foot while they’re out and about. What we like most about these boots, however, is that a set of four shoes is very affordable despite being good quality.
29. Prumya Waterproof Paw Protectors
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
This is another set of dog booties that are great for hunting dogs, particularly those used for hunting waterfowl. The shoe's exterior is brightly colored for easily spotting your dog in the brush, and the neoprene shell is nice and breathable to keep feet from overheating while remaining safe to use in water.
30. Winsoon Australia Dog Booties
Price: $19.99
If you’re a fan of that particular Aussie brand of doggy boot, then you might find these rubber-soled suede pet booties endearing, and they are certainly one of the cutest looking among all the other best dog shoes mentioned here. While we aren’t a fan of the particularly thick tightening strap around the middle of the boot, we do love the fluffy interior for winter walks!
31. PawZ Rubber Dog Boots
Price: $26.00
If you like being “loud” and standing out, then these waterproof silicone dog boots are a great way to do it! Bright yellow, these boots resemble galoshes and have a nice color-coordinated tightening strap to keep them on your dog’s feet. What do we like most about these boots? They come in a larger size range than most other boots.
32. QUMY Dog Boots
Price: $28.99
QUMY dog booties are another option that's perfect for rain or snow. The thick rubber sole is great for keeping feet protected, and the yellow and blue contrasting shell adds a little something unique to the design. The one thing that isn’t ideal about these pet boots is that they only seem to come in smaller size options.
33. Lonsuneer Soft Sole Nonslip Mesh Boots
Price: $17.29
If you prefer the sock-type design for dog boots, the Lonsuneer soft-sole booties might be better for you. At just over $10 for four boots, these neoprene and mesh boots are more than affordable. These aren’t great for indoor use or long outdoor treks, but if you have shorter walks in mind or just need to keep a bandaged foot clean, these are a great and affordable option.
34. Ulandago Breathable Mesh Dog Boots
Price: $11.40
If your pup has particularly fluffy feet, it’s best to look into dog booties like these breathable mesh options from Ulandago. The body of these best dog shoes is covered in breathable mesh, which stops feet from overheating, and the solid sole makes these a good choice for walking indoors, outdoors, and through spring, summer, and fall.
35. Pet Life Flexible Lightweight Dog Booties
Price: $29.99
If the weight of your dog’s boots is a concern, the Pet Life mesh dog booties are a better option. Extremely lightweight, these boots still offer rubberized grips and ankle support, so your pup gets the best of both worlds. We especially love the front zipper that makes taking the shoe off and putting it on easy as pie, and if you’ve ever struggled with dog boots, you know this is HUGE!
36. Spiritup Waterproof Dog Boots
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
The Spiritup waterproof dog shoes are another neoprene type option with a rubber sole. The tip has removable tightening straps that are necessary but also a total pain since they detach and get lost when the boots aren’t in use. We prefer these for in-water shoes to protect your pup's feet at the beach or lake just because the rubber sole doesn’t have much of a grip, rendering it useless on rough terrain.
37. Canine Equipment Ultimate Trail Dog Boots
Price: $58.95
Another of our favorite options on the best dog shoes list, Canine Equipment Ultimate Trail dog boots are built for every terrain you can imagine. The recycled rubber soles have exceptionally intricate treads that provide great traction, and the shoe's design is optimized for comfort and protection. We’re not thrilled with the price point on these, but as with most things, you get what you pay for!
38. Fantastic Zone Waterproof Dog Boots
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
The Fantastic Zone dog boots are soft-soled waterproof shoes. Despite being a soft shoe, the anti-slip rubber sole and toe cap are ideal for pups who have trouble maintaining a grip when standing or walking (think seniors). These obviously aren’t great for cross-country treks, and there are better options for that purpose mentioned on the best dog shoes list, but they are a good choice for water, shorter fall walks, and indoor use.
39. WeiMeet Dog Boots
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
WeiMeet dog boots are made from neoprene. Designed to keep feet dry and comfortable, the sole of the shoe resembles that of a human shoe, offering traction but not enough for rougher terrain. These are a good choice for water activity, beach fun, and spring and fall walks. We don’t recommend them for summer use just because they can cause your pup’s feet to sweat.
40. EXPAWLORER Waterproof Dog Boots
Price: $27.99
We were slightly distracted by the fact that these boots are sold by a company called EXPAWLORER, but when we got over the initial surprise, we knew that these dog boots belonged on our best dog shoes list. Waterproof, windproof, and ideal for getting a grip in winter snow, these $23 boots are a combination of a sturdy rubber sole and a softer, breathable shell that's worth taking a look at.
41. Neartime Dog Boots
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
Neartime dog boots come in a wider variety of colors than most of the other choices on our list of best dog shoes, so if you’re looking for variation, you definitely want to check these out. Available in black, blue, green, orange, pink, and red, these boots are made with acrylic and mesh and have a thin rubber sole that makes them a great shoe for indoor use as well as quick spring and summer trips outside to the potty. They’re not great for heavy-duty use, but at just under $6, you can’t really expect them to be.
42. KOESON Waterproof Dog Shoes
Price: $33.38
The Kwan snow dog boots are unlike most of the other options on our best dog shoes list, they look much more like the design used for human snowsuits. The front toggle has to be our favorite feature on these because it allows for custom tightening around the paw. Our least favorite feature? It has to be the anti-slip sole that is missing some of the durability we see in other boots.
43. Paw4D Waterproof Dog Boots
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
Paw4D waterproof dog boots are a combination of two different kinds of booties; they feature Velcro tightening straps for adjustment, a snowsuit-type material for winter use, and a soft gripping sole for comfortable traction. We’re not positive that the lack of a solid rubber sole is a great idea, but the boot overall is a good option if you’re more interested in warmth. The inside of each boot is filled with fleece to keep feet cozy.
44. OM Proud Horse Pet Boots
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
These dog boots feature an incredibly thick rubber sole, which is perfect for outdoor use, although the design of the shoe makes them better for fall and winter use. Using these boots in the summer may lead to overheating as well as bacterial growth on sweaty paws! These are some of our favorite picks for rainy fall walks and mountain hikes in autumn.
45. MonkeyJack Anti-Skid Winter Snow Boots
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
MonkeyJack dog boots are remarkably similar to HCPet shoes. In fact, they carry the HC Pet name right on the shoe. The biggest difference in the MonkeyJack version of these dog booties is that you have some choice when it comes to color. MonkeyJack dog boots are available in black, blue, neon green/yellow, and neon orange. They have a hard sole with great traction and are great for winter use for working dogs since they’re protective without being bulky or too hot.
46. Moolecole Dog Shoes
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
Although these dog boots have received mixed reviews from pet parents, we must admit to loving them, and with this price tag, they deserve a mention on our best dog shoes list. Made with a breathable mesh shell and thick anti-slip rubber soles, these boots are designed for a comfortable fit and practicality. We love the front zipper for easy on and off and the fact that they offer ten different sizes of shoes to fit all kinds of dogs!
47. Hoxekle Anti-Slip Dog Shoes
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
The Hoxekle anti-slip dog shoes are another combination of boots that combines some of our favorite design features of other shoes. It is a breathable denim dog shoe for small, medium, and large dogs. The soft, anti-slip sole provides stability and traction, protection from sharp thorns and hot pavement, and helps dogs with mobility and stability on tile and sand.
48. O&C Pet Boots
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
O&C pet boots are a nice, colorful choice as cold-weather boots for dogs. A fleece and lycra shoe body wraps around your dog’s foot for a comfortable custom fit while a tightening Velcro strap keeps the shoe on. The best part of this boot for us (aside from the comfort of fit) is that nice thick sole with plenty of traction!
49. V-Hao Reflective Velcro Strap Dog Boots
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
V-Hao boots are one of the more versatile choices on our list of best dog shoes. A thick anti-slip sole makes them great for hiking and wet weather, while the reflective Velcro strips make nighttime walking safe, too. The mesh top of the boot makes sure that feet stay cool and breathe, and while they’re a slight pain to get onto your dog’s feet, they’re worth the struggle because they truly offer everything!
50. Cibeat Waterproof Dog Boots
2024 UPDATE: Currently unavailable on Amazon
The last but not least option on our list of best dog shoes is affordable. Cibeat waterproof boots for dogs are eco-friendly booties and seem to be made from a waterproof fleece-like material with a non-slip sole. The flexibility of these boots makes them easier to put on and more comfortable for your pup to wear, which we love. However, our only problem with these boots is that we’re not exactly convinced they’re waterproof. That said, we do like them for cold weather warmth when paired with a more solid boot or for indoor warmth on cold winter days!
