I’m a firm believer in keeping dogs confined in a crate or cage while they are home alone. That way I know they are safe and I don’t come home to destroyed furniture or an oops! on the floor. It does not have a top or bottom grate. One of the panels is also a pen door that swings open. I get a lot of use from exercise pens like this. I put pups and grown dogs that need to be confined indoors or outdoors in ex-pens to keep them safe and out of trouble. This one comes with anchors that will keep it in place outdoors and help contain ambitious dogs that might try to tunnel under it to escape.

These pens are indispensable when you take your dog on the road with you. The whole thing folds flat, so it is easy to pack. They can be set up quickly at a rest stop so the dog can stretch his or her legs while you take a break or have something to eat. When you are ready to continue on your way, just fold the pen back up, stow it, and go.

The crate is 32 inches long, 23 inches wide, and 21 inches high and comes with a divider that can be useful for crate-training a puppy. They sell this cage in other sizes, too, although they are not offering them at such a great price. The next size down, for dogs that weigh 30 to 50 pounds, is actually $6 more. It is actually cheaper to give your dog a little extra room.

This crate has a door at one end and a door on one side, which I find very helpful. The double door option makes it easier to fit the cage into tight spaces. It also comes with a leak-proof bottom pan that can be removed for cleaning, a handle on top, and it folds up for easy storage.

Nutramax Cosequin DS Plus contains MSM and glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate in a chewable tablet. It is given to dogs to improve cartilage production. This is a great price for this particular joint health supplement. I’ve given this type of supplement to an elderly Rottweiler and saw marked improvement. After a few weeks, he was even keeping up with his Labrador retriever pup brothers.

If your dog is suffering from joint pain, give him 1/2 to 3 tablets, depending on how much he weighs, every day for four to six weeks. Unless your dog is extra-large, he or she will have plenty of room to stretch out and get comfy on his or her own 32” by 24” couch. The $40.87 model is mocha and tan. They are selling a blue and gray model for $44.95. Depending on the dog, you may want to add some cushion with an egg-crate-type foam mattress, as it does seem to compress easily. The filling is soft and may not be enough support for a heavy dog. This is very inexpensive and easy to do, though. Just cut the foam mattress to size, unzip the cover, and slip it in. It is still a bargain, even with the added $10 or so for the foam mattress.

Besides looking classy, this pet bed is eco-friendly and easy to keep clean. The filling is made from recycled plastic bottles, and the whole thing is machine washable. That’s right, the cover, bolster, and filling can all be thrown in the washing machine. I am particularly fond of this option. I like to wash the dog beds every couple of weeks, and this makes it so easy. Nail grinders are easy to use and surprisingly well-tolerated by most dogs. I like the reduced risk of catching the quick, which, unfortunately, is easy to do on black nails. This one has a high and low speed. The high-speed setting will quickly grind off excess nail growth. The low speed won’t grind the nails down as quickly, but it is quieter. This low-speed setting is good for skittish dogs that don’t want you to touch their paws at all, let alone touch them with a scary thing that vibrates and makes noise.

The trick to using these things successfully is getting the dog used to them. Take a week or two to get your dog accustomed to the noise and vibration. You may find your dog even likes the feel of the handle vibrating along his or her back. Start out with it set on low so the dog gets used to the sound, then turn it on high. Give the dog a tasty treat or two when he or she sits quietly. When you are ready to grind the dog’s nails down, cover his or her eyes. These things kick up dust from the nails while grinding them down. The dust will cause irritation if it gets in the dog's eyes. Just drape a towel over his or her eyes or tie a soft sock loosely around the dog’s head. You might want to wear some protective eyewear, too.
