Jack Berry and Harry Shallop came up with a great idea back in 1988 to open a supermarket-style pet food and supply store. The first Pet Supplies Plus was opened in Redford, Michigan later that year. Now, more than 25 years later, there are over 325 chain locations in 25 different states. The company offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to open their own franchise, and that’s just what one couple recently did in Missouri.
John and Cynthia LeFort said they chose to open a Pet Supplies Plus based on the brands reputation. They noticed that there was a large demand in their area for quality pet food, supplies, and services and they want to give consumers what they deserve.

Pet Supplies Plus strives to stock products that are healthy and safe for all pets. They stock an extensive selection of dry and canned natural foods, and they have a large selection of products that are made in the U.S.A. The company prides itself on offering innovative pet products to owners that want the best for their furry friends.
They also partner with local animal rescue organizations to host adoptions events. Not to mention the company organizes fundraising activities to support local animal shelters and different animal related charities. Select locations even offer in-store, low-cost vaccination events for their customers. It’s easy to see why the LeFort’s chose this business to franchise.
John has over 20 years of experience in the retail industry as a store manager, buyer, and merchandiser. He said that when looking into franchises it was hard to select just the right one that he felt would do well in Warson Woods. He wanted a business that he could take pride in and one that would make a positive impact on its customers, their pets, and the local community.

Pet Supplies Plus was exactly what he was looking for. He also chose to use the new store prototype which includes a new store design layout, a fresh color scheme, and emphasizes pet interaction, functionality, and convenience. The store will include a grooming salon and a self-service pet wash.
They will stock healthy pet food brands including Back to Basics, Hill’s Science Diet, Nature’s Recipe, and Purina Pro Plan Dog. They’ll also have an extensive collection of pet toys, treats, and accessories from brands like KONG and Greenies.
UPDATE (June 26, 2015): This article has previously mentioned a wrong number of Pet Supplies Plus stores across the US. The number has now been corrected.
