Recipe: Pumpkin and Honey Dog Treats

Making homemade doggy snacks is the only way to ensure your pup is getting safe, healthy ingredients that are catered to her needs. If your dog has food allergies or sensitivities, you can substitute ingredients to accommodate them. These pumpkin and honey dog treats, for example, could be made with gluten free flour.

Treats should be fed sparingly, so many owners don't think the quality of treats is that important. If you're one of these owners, you're sadly mistaken.

They may not make up a large portion of her diet, but over time the toxins, chemicals, artificial ingredients, and fillers found in poor quality treats can lead to serious negative health effects. You should put as much consideration into the treats you feed your pet as you do the dog food she eats every day.

IngredientsIngredients

  • 2.5 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup wheat germ
  • 1/2 cup ground flax seed
  • 1 tbsp. honey
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1/2 cup canned pumpkin

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350˚ F.

Combine the flour, wheat germ and flax seed in a large mixing bowl. In a separate bowl, combine the honey, eggs, oil, water, applesauce and pumpkin. Pumpkin is a great ingredient to add to dog treats, because it aids in healthy digestion and regular bowel movements.

Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients while constantly stirring. Once all ingredients are combined, a sticky dough will form.

dough in a muffin pan

You can drop small dough balls on a well greased cookie sheet and press them down with a fork. As you will see in my video guide above, I chose to put the dough into a mini muffin tray. You could also use small silicone cookie molds if you have them.

Bake the dog cookies for about 25-30 minutes. You'll know they are done when the dough turns a nice golden brown color. Store the dog treats in an airtight container for 10-14 days. You can also freeze the treats in an airtight container if you'd like to keep them longer.
