Dachshunds come in two varieties – standard and miniature. No matter which variety you have, these dogs are unique in their body structure and personalities. While these unique traits make them interesting pets, it also means they are not the easiest breed to feed. This homemade dog food for Dachshunds may be a good choice to give your pup the nutrition he needs.
The right dog food for your Dachshund will depend on his size, life stage (age) and body weight. His overall health condition and activity level are also variables that affect his nutritional needs.
Before switching your dog's diet or starting him on a home cooked food, it's important to discuss the change with your veterinarian. If your veterinarian is not open to the idea of home cooking for dogs, you can seek the advice of a canine nutritionist or perhaps a holistic veterinarian.
Dachshunds are a small breed, but they can be very energetic. For this reason, finding the appropriate calorie count for your Dachshund is extremely important. Their long body style makes them prone to back problems, and being overweight can greatly increase your dog's chances of developing spinal and back issues.
Your veterinarian or a canine nutritionist will evaluate your dog to assist you in figuring out his specific nutritional needs. They can guide you in developing recipes that will have the appropriate amount of calories, protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals and other necessary daily nutrients.
Homemade Dog Food for Dachshunds Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 pound mutton (cubed)
- 3 1/2 cups oatmeal
- 1/2 cup shredded cucumber
- 5 tbsp. fish oil
Directions
Dachshunds are an energetic small breed, which means they have a faster metabolism and a higher caloric need than many other small breeds. These little dogs are also prone to obesity and require a sufficient amount of protein to support lean muscle mass and prevent unnecessary weight gain.
Weiner dogs are also prone to allergies, so a limited ingredient diet is a good option for them. Likewise, common protein sources, like chicken and beef, can cause allergy flair-ups in many dogs. This homemade dog food for Dachshunds only uses 4 ingredients, and mutton is the chosen protein source.
Boil the cubed mutton in a medium-size saucepan for about 90 minutes on low heat. The natural juices of the mutton should supply enough liquid, but if not you can add about 1/4 cup of water.
While the mutton is cooking, prepare the oats according to the instructions on the packaging. When the mutton is finished cooking, drain any residual water. Now, mix the mutton, oatmeal, cucumber, and fish oil together.
When all of the ingredients have cooled you can feed this homemade dog food for Dachshunds to your pooch. I recommend feeding about 1/4 cup of food for every 10 pounds of body weight per serving. This recommendation is for 2 servings per day.
