A voluntary recall for a large number of Hill’s Pet Nutrition dog foods was just released, affecting foods sold within North America due to excessively high vitamin D levels.
A report was issued by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States (FDA) yesterday. This dog food recall affects only canned dog food sold in the United States that were distributed through retail pet stores and veterinary clinics nationwide. No dry kibble, cat foods, or pet treats are affected.

The company behind these contaminated pet foods, Hill’s Pet Nutrition, took action after they received reports regarding a dog who displayed vitamin D overdose symptoms after eating their foods. The company then launched an investigation into the issue and realized that their foods did, indeed, have elevated levels of vitamin D.
Hill’s Pet Nutrition said in a statement that this error occurred due to a supplier’s mistake. They have asked their suppliers to comply to new quality rules by adding more quality tests before shipping off their ingredients.
If you have purchased any of the affected products, immediately stop feeding them to your pet. You can return unopened packs and cans of products to local retailers in order to receive a refund. Dangers of Vitamin D Toxicity in Dogs
Although more vitamin D can sound like a good thing, a too-high amount of this nutrient is dangerous for animals, and it's particularly toxic to dogs. Elevated vitamin D consumption can eventually lead to very severe and even fatal health problems in dogs, including renal failure.
Vitamin D can also result in a variety of other health problems, with symptoms such as:
- Increased levels of thirst
- Increased frequency of urination
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Pain in the abdomen and stomach
- Bloody feces
- Bloody vomit
- Appetite loss
- Weight loss
- Muscle tremors
- Excessive drooling
- Fatigue or lethargy
- Seizures
- Depression
If your pup begins to exhibit any signs of vitamin D toxicity after eating these foods, you should take them to the veterinarian immediately. The condition can be fatal and the first 72 hours of treatment are vital to saving your dog’s life. It is an expensive poisoning to treat and may require long-term management.
