Recipe: Homemade Wheat and Gluten Free Dog Treats

Dogs don't typically need a gluten free diet. Most owners that choose to feed a gluten free diet do so because they want their pet's diet to mimic their own. Other owners feel that an ancestral diet is best for dogs, and wild dogs did not eat grains or products containing gluten. Whether you want your pup to be gluten free or not, these homemade wheat and gluten free dog treats are a healthy choice for any pooch.

Did you know that a grain free diet and a gluten free diet are not the same thing? A lot of people use these terms synonymously, but they are actually two very different things. As the name suggests, grain free dog food is a diet that does not include any type of grain.

However, not all grains contain gluten. For example, both rice and quinoa are grains, but neither contain gluten. Remember: a grain free dog food diet is ALWAYS gluten free, but a gluten free diet may or may not contain grains.

Studies have shown that there is a reason to consider feeding your dog a gluten free diet. Whether your veterinarian has recommended this diet or you just prefer to feed your dog this way, these homemade wheat and gluten free dog treats will fit in with his nutritional needs.

  • 1 tsp. cinnamon

Mix all of the ingredients in a small mixing bowl until a dough forms. The dough will be quite sticky.

Homemade Wheat and Gluten Free Dog Treats RecipeAs you will see in my video guide above, I used a silicone cookie mold to form my homemade wheat and gluten free dog treats. If you don't have a mold like this, you can roll the dough out on a floured surface and cut out small shapes.

If you don't have a silicone mold, roll the dough out until it's about 1/4″ thick. Use a small cookie cutter or cut the dough into small squares with a pizza cutter. Remember, these are just treats, so cut them into appropriate sizes for your dog.

Place the cookies on a well greased cookie sheet. Whether they're on a cookie sheet or you're using a silicone mold, bake these homemade wheat and gluten free dog treats for 10-15 minutes or until the top of the cookies begin to crack.

Remember, these are just treats. They should be fed sparingly. Even though these treats are much healthier than many commercial dog treat products, they still add extra calories to Fido's daily diet.
