Recipe: Sweet Potato Dog Biscuits

A lot of pet owners don't want to make their own dog food and treats because of the time involved in preparing them. While some recipes can be quite time consuming, these sweet potato dog biscuits are made with only three ingredients and just a few minutes of prep time. They bake in about 20 minutes and can be made in bulk quantities to be frozen for later use.

These aren't like traditional dog biscuits either. You're probably picturing a dry biscuit that crumbles when you try to break it apart. Not these! They're soft and a bit moist in the middle. They are the perfect snack for dogs with dental issues or missing teeth.

Delicious Sweet Potato Dog Biscuits RecipeI love making my own dog treats, because I make them in them in the appropriate size for each of our dogs. We have a Labrador Retriever, Saddie, and a Beagle mix, Molly. I like having the ability to make small treats for Molly and larger treats for Saddie. Not to mention, homemade treats are much healthier than most commercial dog treats.

Most dogs love the taste of sweet potato, and these vegetables are very healthy for your canine companion. Sweet potatoes are low in fat and high in dietary fiber. They are also a good source of vitamin B6, vitamin C and manganese.

Like carrots, these veggies are rich in the antioxidant beta-carotene, which converts to Vitamin A when processed by your dog's body. Vitamin A is an essential nutrient for proper growth, muscle strength and vision. They can also help soothe an upset stomach.

These easy homemade dog treats are a great way to add sweet potato into your dog's daily diet!

Sweet Potato Dog Biscuit Recipe

My Favorite Sweet Potato Dog Biscuit RecipeIngredients

  • 1 3/4 cups whole wheat flour (you can substitute rice flour or gluten free flour if your dog has allergies)
  • 1 cup of sweet potato (canned or fresh)
  • 1 beaten egg

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350°.

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl to form a dough. As I mention in my video guide above, if the dough is too dry you can add about 1/2 cup water. If you use canned sweet potatoes (like I did) you probably won't need to add any water because they are so moist.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Roll the dough into small balls and place it on them on the parchment paper. Press the dough balls down with a fork until the biscuits are about 1/4″ thick.

You don't need to worry about placing the biscuits far apart. There is no rising agent, like yeast, in this recipe, so the biscuits won't rise and stick together. You don't need to worry about placing the biscuits far apart. Bake the sweet potato dog biscuits in your 350° oven for about 20 minutes. You'll notice that they turn golden brown when they're done. If you've made yours a bit thicker than 1/4″ they may need to bake for 25-30 minutes. Just keep checking until they've turned a nice shade of golden brown.

You can store leftover biscuits in an airtight container for about 5 days. If you store them in the refrigerator they should last about 10-14 days. You can also freeze the dough or the baked cookies in an airtight container for up to 3 months.
