Dog treats are great for praising our pets, making them happy and giving them a little snack between meals. The problem is that most pet parents don't pay attention to the ingredients in the treats they feed their pet. With these limited ingredient dog treats, you'll know exactly what you're feeding your dog.
Making your own dog treats also gives you the peace of mind in knowing that they won't be featured on the recall list shared on the nightly news. You can find local, organic, natural ingredients to make Fido's treats with. Making treats allows you to know every ingredient, where it's sourced and how it was made.
Aside from peace of mind, homemade treats are typically much healthier for your dog than the store bought kind. They don't include preservatives, artificial colors or artificial flavorings. And, when you make limited ingredient dog treats, you know your pup isn't getting a bunch of fillers that aren't nutritionally beneficial.

Apple and Carrot Limited Ingredient Dog Treats
Ingredients
- 1 cup of whole wheat flour (you can use gluten free flour if your dog is allergic)
- 1 cup of grated carrots
- 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce
- 1 egg
Directions
It's not just the ingredients that are limited with this recipe, the prep work is too. If you make homemade applesauce, it may take some time, but if not there is virtually no prep work involved in this recipe.
You can grate your own carrots, which I do because we get them fresh from our garden. You can also buy pre-shredded carrots if you want to save some time. Either way, your dog is getting carrots, which are a great source of vitamins and fiber.
Preheat your oven to 350°.
Mix all four ingredients in a medium bowl. Blend them together until a moist dough forms. Then, line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
As I demonstrate in my video, you'll want to place small balls of dough onto the parchment paper about 1″ apart. There is no rising agent in this recipe, so you don't have to worry about the cookies baking up and spreading into each other.
Once all your dough balls are placed on the parchment paper, squish them down with the back of a fork. I also demonstrate this in my video guide above if you need to see it done.
Bake the cookies for about 25 minutes in the 350° oven. You'll see that they turn a nice shade of golden brown when they are finished. Once the cookies cool, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. You can also freeze the dough or the baked cookies in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months.
