Dogs that suffer from pancreatitis are often proscribed a low-fat diet. Dogs who have been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) also seem to respond well to this type of diet. No matter what the reason, this low-fat homemade dog food recipe will provide the nutrients he needs without the additional fat found in traditional pet food.
There are a number of reasons that your veterinarian may prescribe a low-fat diet for your pup. While they may suggest a low-fat prescription diet, homemade recipes may actually be much healthier for him. Discuss all of your options with your veterinarian and let them know that you're interested in going the homemade route.
If your vet isn't open to the idea of feeding your dog a homemade diet, ask for a second opinion from a holistic veterinarian or a canine nutritionist.
If you're concerned that your dog is overweight, DON'T switch his diet without consulting your vet or a canine nutritionist. It's important that your dog still gets all the nutritional elements that his body needs, and switching his diet without knowing exactly what he needs increases the risk of making his diet deficient in some of those required nutrients.
Diets low in fat are often deficient in important nutrients like Vitamin A and Vitamin E. A low-fat diet may help your pet in certain aspects of his health, but it may actually do more harm than good in the long run. For example, a diet deficient in Vitamin A could result in a weakened immune system and extremely dry skin.

Low-Fat Homemade Dog Food Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 cup cooked lean ground beef (fat drained)
- 1 cup cooked brown rice
- 3/4 cup non-fat cottage cheese
- 1/2 cup cooked broccoli
- 1/2 cup cooked squash
Directions
This low-fat homemade dog food recipe is very easy to make. All you need to do is cook the ground beef and drain the fat, and then cook the vegetables. You can steam the broccoli and squash or boil it like I did.
Then all you need to do is combined all of the ingredients in a medium sized bowl. Stir until they are thoroughly mixed.
You can serve this dog food to your pet immediately, or store it for serving at a later time. Store this low-fat homemade dog food recipe in the refrigerator in an airtight container for storage of about 3-5 days. Because it doesn't contain the preservatives that commercial diets do, it won't keep nearly as long.
You can also make a larger batch in advance and freeze it in an airtight container for up to 3 months. I do this often, so I can still have homemade dog food available for my girls during busy weeks when I don't have the time to prepare it.
