Recipe: Homemade Dog Food for Loose Stool

It's virtually guaranteed that your dog is going to suffer from loose stool from time to time throughout this life.

Whether it's because he ate something he shouldn't have or he's fighting off a bout of the flu, this homemade dog food for loose stool may help.

Diarrhea is caused by digestive upset. It's usually not something to worry about, but if it lasts for more than 48 hours, you should call your veterinarian.

Likewise, if the loose stool is accompanied by other symptoms, you should contact your vet immediately.

This homemade dog food should not be fed long-term, but it will help to get your dog's GI tract back on track.

Ingredients like rice, pumpkin, and coconut oil have natural properties that will help soothe the digestive organs and firm up the stool.

Diarrhea could be due to an allergic reaction, stress, or even a bacterial infection. It is one of the body’s ways of removing toxins and cleansing itself.

Unfortunately, loose stool in dogs could also be a symptom of a more serious health concern.

Diarrhea by itself isn't much to get concerned over. If it is accompanied by fever, lethargy, blood in the stool, vomiting, or other serious health symptoms, you should call your veterinarian for a consult and guidance on what to do next.

Homemade Dog Food for Loose Stool

As long as the loose stool isn't accompanied by any other symptoms, a couple of meals of this homemade dog food may help to settle the stomach and firm up the stool.

You can even feed a small amount as a snack a few times per day to help soothe Fido's digestive tract.

If the loose stool has continued for more than 48 hours, a visit to the veterinarian is a must. Your dog could become dehydrated if he has diarrhea for more than 2 days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 chicken breasts (skinless & boneless)
  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 1 cup pumpkin chopped into pieces
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Instructions

While you may think that coconut oil would have the opposite effect on your dog's digestion, this small amount will do your dog's guts some good.

It is packed with prebiotic benefits and has natural anti-inflammatory properties. Not only will it help to get your dog's GI tract back on track, it will also help to soothe any inflammation that is causing your dog's gut to be upset.

First, melt the coconut oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Cook the chicken in the oil.

Boil or bake the pumpkin until soft. Cook the rice according to the instructions on the packaging.

Combine all of the ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Once the recipe has cooled, you can serve this homemade dog food for loose stool to your pet.

Serving Size Recommendation

You can serve this food to your dog as soon as it has cooled. I recommend feeding about 1/2 cup of food for every 20-25 pounds of body weight.

This recommendation is for 2 servings per day. So, a 75-pound dog would eat about 1.5 cups in the morning and 1.5 cups in the evening.

Homemade dog food recipes are made with whole food ingredients, so they are more nutrient-dense than commercial dog food. This means that your dog doesn't need to eat as much homemade food to get the same amount of nutrients.

Remember that this is just a guideline.

Some dogs, like working dogs and very active breeds, will need more calories than this. Lazier pets and senior dogs may not need as many.

It's best to consult your veterinarian about the appropriate serving size for your dog. They will also help you evaluate the meal to make sure it will meet your pet's unique nutritional needs.

If necessary, they will assist you in choosing the best supplements and/or multivitamins to add.

How to store

You can store the leftover homemade dog food for loose tools in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-5 days or freeze it. It will be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Keep in mind that this recipe includes no preservatives, so it won't last nearly as long as commercial dog food.
