50 Surfurs compete in the 18th Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon featured image

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA—Fifty adorable sur-fur dogs competed in the Helen Woodward Animal Center's 18th Annual Dog Surf Surf-A-Thon competition held at the Del Mar Dog Beach in California.

The paw-ticipants competed in 10-minute heats, where the judges rated the length of their ride, technique, confidence, and enthusiasm.

Dogs of different sizes competed in different categories, and one furball each were declared the winner.

They were:

Extra small dogs: Delilah
Small dogs: Sugar
Medium dogs: Faith
Large dogs: Guinness
Extra large dogs: Barney Bear
These pups then competed in the ultimate challenge of the ‘Best in Surf' category, where Sugar the Surfing Dog won, followed by Delilah and Guinness, the English Bulldog.

But not only dogs get to compete, they also surfed with their pet parents in the Peeps and Pups category and the Freestyle category.
Apart from the surfing, they also had a Barkstar and Legend Costume Contest where sassy and fashionable dogs strut the runway.

The Annual Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon competition organized by the Helen Woodward Animal Center is said to be the longest surfing competition for dogs in the country, that aims to raise funds for the orphaned pets at the animal center.
The interest in dog surfing started in the 1920s in Hawaii and California, and has picked up popularity in the US and other parts of the world since then.
