Nearly 40 dogs were rescued from extreme heat in an abandoned U-Haul truck in Oklahoma City.

Officers from Oklahoma City Police Department were alerted to the truck last June 5.

Bodycam from the police officer shows the moment they opened up the trailer upon arriving at the scene, where they found 36 dogs and puppies in locked cages.

They recorded a temperature that was higher than 110F (43C) in the back.

The dogs were then taken in by animal welfare, according to OKCPD.

They added that the investigation led to the arrest of two people facing 36 counts of animal cruelty.

Unfortunately, one dog died due to heatstroke even despite the rescue effort. A total of 35 rescued dogs survived.

When the dogs were rescued, the National Weather Service sent an excessive heat warning in Oklahoma.

OKCPD identified Dexter and Linda Manuel as the truck renters, and both were arrested.

Both will face 36 counts of animal cruelty, a misdemeanor count of transporting animals in a cruel or inhumane manner, and a count of violating commercial pet breeders and animal licensing.

OKC Animal Welfare believed that the couple was operating a puppy mill.
